Connect your domain at Bluehost

Bluehost is a web host, and many Bluehost customers also have their email there. Check your email setting first: it decides whether you can do this yourself in ten minutes or should let us send you exact steps.

Watch it first

43 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.

Your changes

For yourdomain.com, at Bluehost:

TypeNameValueWhat it does
A@2.25.245.213your domain points at your new site
CNAMEwww@points www at your domain
AAAA@, wwwdeleteold IPv6 records point at your old host

Email records (MX, TXT) stay exactly as they are. We never need your password.

  • Take a screenshot of your records before you change anything. If something goes wrong, you can put them back.
  • Your new site is already live on its temporary address, so there is no rush and no downtime.
STEP 1

Open your DNS records

  1. Sign in to the Bluehost Portal and select Domains in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select your domain (yourdomain.com) if you have more than one.
  3. Select DNS in the domain's top menu. The records are under Manage Advanced DNS Records.

Changes here only count if your domain uses Bluehost's nameservers (see the Nameservers tab).

STEP 2

Check your email first

  1. Find the MX record. Look at what it points to.
  2. It points to your own domain (yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com)? Your email runs on Bluehost and is tied to the record you'd change. Stop here and reply to our email: we'll send the exact steps that keep your mail working.
  3. It points to Google, Microsoft (outlook.com), titan.email or another provider? Carry on: your email isn't affected.

Don't cancel your Bluehost plan while your mailboxes live there.

STEP 3

Change the records

  1. On the A record with Host Record @: three-dot menu → Edit. Set Points To to 2.25.245.213 and select Edit (that's the save button).
  2. Any other A record for @, and every AAAA record: three-dot menu → Delete → Delete.
  3. Check the CNAME for www points to your domain (Bluehost's default). Missing? + Add record: CNAME, Host Record www, Points To @.

Website redirects you set up in Bluehost (Websites → Manage Site → Domains → Redirects) stop working after the move. Tell us about any you need and we'll set them up on the new site.

After you save

  • Bluehost says minutes up to 8 hours for most records (up to 48 hours worst case).
  • We check every hour and email you the moment your site is live on your domain. The secure certificate (the padlock) is set up automatically.
  • Want to look yourself? Use the domain checker.
  • If something is in the way (an old record, a setting), we email you once with the exact fix.
