If your domain's DNS is on Cloudflare, there is one setting that matters more than any other: both records must be DNS only (the grey cloud), not Proxied (the orange cloud).
41 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.
For yourdomain.com, at Cloudflare:
| Type | Name | Value | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
A | @ | 2.25.245.213 | your domain points at your new site |
CNAME | www | yourdomain.com | points www at your domain |
AAAA | @, www | delete | old IPv6 records point at your old host |
Email records (MX, TXT) stay exactly as they are. We never need your password.
@.)2.25.245.213.Why the grey cloud? An orange cloud makes Cloudflare answer instead of our server. Your site can't go live and we can't see your change. If even one A record on the name stays orange, Cloudflare treats them all as proxied.
www is an A or AAAA record, delete it first (Edit → Delete). Cloudflare won't add a CNAME next to it.CNAME, Name www, Target yourdomain.com (type the domain, not @), Proxy status DNS only, then Save. If a www CNAME already exists, edit it instead.Leave MX and TXT records alone. Page Rules, Redirect Rules and Workers routes only act on proxied (orange) records, so once both records are grey they stop applying.
