Connect your domain at GoDaddy

If your domain's DNS is at GoDaddy, this takes about ten minutes. You change one record, delete any old ones, and check that nothing is forwarding your domain somewhere else.

Watch it first

40 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.

Your changes

For yourdomain.com, at GoDaddy:

TypeNameValueWhat it does
A@2.25.245.213your domain points at your new site
CNAMEwww@points www at your domain
AAAA@, wwwdeleteold IPv6 records point at your old host

Email records (MX, TXT) stay exactly as they are. We never need your password.

  • Take a screenshot of your records before you change anything. If something goes wrong, you can put them back.
  • Your new site is already live on its temporary address, so there is no rush and no downtime.
STEP 1

Open your DNS records

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy and open your Domain Portfolio.
  2. Select your domain name (yourdomain.com). Its Domain Settings page opens.
  3. Select the DNS tab. The DNS Records table opens.

No records, or a message that DNS is managed elsewhere? Your domain uses another company's nameservers. Use the domain checker to find out which one.

STEP 2

Turn off forwarding, if you have it

  1. Under DNS, select Forwarding.
  2. If your domain is listed there, select the trash can next to it, then confirm with Delete.
  3. Back on DNS Records: if a banner above the table names a connected site or template (GoDaddy Website Builder, Airo, Squarespace…), select Remove next to it and confirm.

Forwarding and connected templates lock the A record. If you can't edit it in the next step, this is why.

STEP 3

Change the records

  1. Find the A record with @ in the Name column. Select the pencil, set the value to 2.25.245.213 and select Save. If it holds more than one IP address, remove the others.
  2. Any other A record named @: tick its box, select Delete, confirm with Delete Records.
  3. Delete every AAAA record named @ or www the same way.
  4. Check the CNAME named www: its value should be @. That is GoDaddy's usual setting. If it points elsewhere, edit it to @; if it's missing, select Add New Record, choose CNAME, Name www, Value @, and save.

Domain Protection on? GoDaddy asks for a code by text, app or email before it saves. That's normal.

Leave MX and TXT records exactly as they are: they run your email.

After you save

  • Most changes work within an hour; GoDaddy says up to 48 hours.
  • We check every hour and email you the moment your site is live on your domain. The secure certificate (the padlock) is set up automatically.
  • Want to look yourself? Use the domain checker.
  • If something is in the way (an old record, a setting), we email you once with the exact fix.
