Connect your domain at Squarespace

including domains moved over from Google Domains

Domains bought at Squarespace, and every domain that used to be at Google Domains, are managed in Squarespace's Domains dashboard. You remove Squarespace's website preset and add two records.

Watch it first

37 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.

Your changes

For yourdomain.com, at Squarespace:

TypeNameValueWhat it does
A@2.25.245.213your domain points at your new site
CNAMEwwwyourdomain.compoints www at your domain
AAAA@, wwwdeleteold IPv6 records point at your old host

Email records (MX, TXT) stay exactly as they are. We never need your password.

  • Take a screenshot of your records before you change anything. If something goes wrong, you can put them back.
  • Your new site is already live on its temporary address, so there is no rush and no downtime.
STEP 1

Open DNS Settings

  1. Sign in at squarespace.com/login. Used Google Domains and never had a Squarespace account? One was made for you with your Google Domains email: choose Continue with Google.
  2. Open your domains dashboard (account.squarespace.com/domains) and select your domain.
  3. Select DNS, then DNS Settings.

Squarespace asks for your password or a 2-step code on each change. That's normal.

STEP 2

Remove the defaults, add two records

  1. In the Squarespace Defaults block, select the red trash can and confirm. This removes its four A records and its www record together.
  2. Under Custom records, delete any other A or AAAA record named @ and any AAAA named www.
  3. Select Add record: Type A, Name @, Data 2.25.245.213, Save.
  4. Add record again: Type CNAME, Name www, Data yourdomain.com (type the domain, not @), Save.

Keep the Google Workspace MX block, any record ending in googlehosted.com, and every MX and TXT record. They run your email.

Domain forwarding on? Go to your domain → Website → Domain Forwarding and delete it with the trash can.

STEP 3

Cancelling your Squarespace website later (optional)

  1. Only after the new site is live on your domain. The domain subscription stays and keeps renewing.
  2. A very old free domain (registered before March 2015) must be switched to paid during cancellation, or it expires.

After you save

  • Squarespace says 24–48 hours; often quicker.
  • We check every hour and email you the moment your site is live on your domain. The secure certificate (the padlock) is set up automatically.
  • Want to look yourself? Use the domain checker.
  • If something is in the way (an old record, a setting), we email you once with the exact fix.
