Connect your domain at Wix

If your domain was bought through Wix, or uses Wix's nameservers, you change its records in your Wix account. Your email (for example Google Workspace through Wix) keeps working: you only touch the website records.

Watch it first

48 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.

Your changes

For yourdomain.com, at Wix:

TypeNameValueWhat it does
A@2.25.245.213your domain points at your new site
CNAMEwwwyourdomain.compoints www at your domain
AAAA@, wwwdeleteold IPv6 records point at your old host

Email records (MX, TXT) stay exactly as they are. We never need your password.

  • Take a screenshot of your records before you change anything. If something goes wrong, you can put them back.
  • Your new site is already live on its temporary address, so there is no rush and no downtime.
STEP 1

Unassign the domain from your Wix site

  1. In your Wix account, go to Domains.
  2. Select the three-dot Domain Actions icon next to yourdomain.com.
  3. Select Unassign from this site, read the notice, then Unassign Domain.

This is instant and can be undone. Your Wix site keeps its free wixsite.com address for now. Wix doesn't say this step is required, but it stops Wix fighting over the records.

STEP 2

Change the records

  1. Open Domain Actions again and select Manage DNS Records.
  2. In A (Host): select + Add Record, leave Host Name blank, Value 2.25.245.213, Save, then Save Changes.
  3. Delete Wix's old A record(s) (usually 185.230.63.107): the More Actions icon → Delete → Delete Record.
  4. In CNAME (Aliases): edit the www row (it points at something ending in wixdns.net) and set the Value to yourdomain.com. Save.
  5. If there is an AAAA section, delete those records too.

Host Name blank is how Wix writes what other companies call @.

No Manage DNS Records option? Your domain was bought elsewhere and only pointed at Wix. Make the changes at that company instead: use the domain checker to find it.

Don't touch MX, TXT or the Google CNAMEs: they run your email.

STEP 3

Cancelling Wix later (optional)

  1. Wait until your new site is live on your domain and your email still works.
  2. Cancelling the Wix Premium plan does not cancel your domain or business email: those are separate subscriptions. Keep both.
  3. If your domain came free with the plan, check it has its own paid renewal turned on first.

After you save

  • Wix says changes can take up to 48 hours; most are much faster.
  • We check every hour and email you the moment your site is live on your domain. The secure certificate (the padlock) is set up automatically.
  • Want to look yourself? Use the domain checker.
  • If something is in the way (an old record, a setting), we email you once with the exact fix.
