No hosting yet? Put your site on Netlify

free for a small site

If you don't have a web host, Netlify hosts a site like yours for free: you drag the folder onto a web page. Then you point your domain at Netlify. (Prefer that we host it, with care and backups? Reply to our email.)

Watch it first

39 seconds, with narration. The steps below say the same thing in writing.

Before you start: download the zip from the link in our email and keep a copy. Have your hosting login ready. Allow about fifteen minutes.

STEP 1

Drop your site

  1. Unzip the site on your computer (Windows: right-click → Extract All…; Mac: double-click).
  2. Sign up or sign in at netlify.com first: sites dropped without an account are deleted after an hour.
  3. Go to app.netlify.com/drop and drag the unzipped folder (the one with index.html inside) onto the page. Netlify wants a folder, not a zip.
  4. You get a working address ending in .netlify.app right away.
STEP 2

Use your own domain

  1. In your site's Domain management, select Add domain → Add a domain you already own, type it, Verify, Add domain.
  2. Where your domain's DNS is managed, set: A record for @ → 75.2.60.5, and CNAME for www → your .netlify.app address.
  3. Our Connect your domain guides show where those records are at GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap and others: use Netlify's values instead of ours.

HTTPS turns on by itself once the records point at Netlify. DNS changes can take up to 24–48 hours.

Check it works

  • Open your domain in a private window (or press Ctrl+F5) so you don't see a saved copy of the old site.
  • Click through every page, and send yourself a test message from the contact form: it goes to the email you gave us.
  • Padlock missing? Automatic (Let's Encrypt) once your domain points at Netlify: see Domain management → HTTPS.
  • Everything works? You can delete old-site later, once you're sure. And update your website on Google: Google Business Profile guide.

Stuck?

  • Read common problems first: most fixes take a minute.
  • Your host's own support team can do the upload for you in a few minutes: send them the zip and say "please put these files in my website's web root".
  • We don't log into hosting accounts, so we can't do the upload for you. If you'd rather not deal with it at all, reply to our email: we can host the site for you on a small monthly plan instead. hello@moxywebstudio.com
